One week from today

Feb 22 we will have our NT scan/study, and for you who may not know, here is the study description:

Blood test – complete blood count (CBC) and urine test. Nuchal translucency scan (measurement of the fold behind the baby’s neck). Sonologist looks for a nasal bone and measures Biparietal Diameter (BPD), across the top of the head at its widest point. Sonologist looks for gross congenital anomalies (GCA)

This is one of those milestone dates....looking for abnormalities...ugh.  It will be another heart sinking email when the results are sent to us.  Of course we expect all is ok, but you cannot really breathe until the results are in black and white.   After this hurdle we will then move onto the dreaded triple marker test sometime between week 16 and 18.  I always wondered what this test looks at.  It is a simple blood test that looks for three specific substances:

AFP: alpha-fetoprotein is a protein that is produced by the fetus.
hCG: human chorionic gonadotropin is a hormone produced within the placenta
Estriol: estriol is an estrogen produced by both the fetus and the placenta

Screening tests do not look only at results from the blood test.  They compare a number of different factors (including age, ethnicity, results from blood tests, etc...) and then estimate what a person’s chances are of having an abnormality in baby.  This is a screening test, not a diagnostic test and the results will decide next steps if god forbid they are not favourable.  But, deep breath, all will be fine!  I guess we are just lucky in this day and age to have almost too much information!

  2. Hi Mark and Kerrie,

We had our NT test a few weeks back and I was exactly the same...with so many disappointments you just expect the worse but you just need to remain positive and all will be fine. We've had our triple marker a few days ago but dont get the results for 3 weeks, so feel tense all over again! However, we have a new scan to look forward tomorrow as we are now in our 17th week! Hooray!! Look forward to hearing more good news from you!

    Best wishes

    Adam and Michael

  6. Take in deep breaths and release all that worry out into the world. Your family is IN process...let yourself focus on the positive energy of the good stuff on its way.
    Hugs!

  7. If you remember way back, Bella's triple marker test was not favorable. It means next to nothing. They did amnio and all was well. It is so inconclusive I don't know why they bother.
God is in control. In the palm of His hand is the safest place for your little one. Love, GeGe

  8. 36 weeks is a long time for those of us who have to monitor our pregnancies from afar, but try to find some other projects to distract you! "Most pregnancies are completely uneventful" -- repeat as necessary.
